a prominent place in the Amsab-building because of its timeless message
of both fraternity and solidarity.

De tentoonstelling wordt georganiseerd door Amsab-ISG i.s.m. het
|
Masereel verlengd tot en met 15 februari... Wellicht zou Masereel, in wiens werk en persoonlijkheid we een stevige
dosis anarchisme en een hoog ‘uilenspiegelgehalte’ aantreffen,
er zelf nog het hardst mee moeten lachen. Door een eigenaardige speling
van het lot immers organiseert Amsab-ISG uitgerekend in de Gentse kazerne
een tentoonstelling rond het grafisch en uitgesproken pacifistisch werk
van deze Vlaamse kunstenaar. Aanleiding voor de tentoonstelling is het
verwerven van originele houtblokken van onder andere Die Passion eines
Menschen en Debout les morts. Masereel sneed de blokken in de periode
dat hij, wegens zijn consequent pacifisme, in miserabele omstandigheden
in Genève verbleef als politiek vluchteling. De blokken behoren
tot zijn sterkste en meest geëngageerde werk. In de tentoonstelling zal zowel aandacht besteed worden aan het artistieke aspect van dit werk, als aan de maatschappelijke context waarin het werd gerealiseerd. In de reeks Cahiers van het Museum zal een begeleidende catalogus gepubliceerd worden. De tentoonstelling kadert binnen het Museum van de Vlaamse Sociale Strijd van het Provinciebestuur Oost-Vlaanderen, als tweede luik van het project Arbeid en Cultuur. Ze loopt van 21 oktober 2005 tot 15 januari 2006. Er worden eventueel ook nocturnes voorzien.

The Amsterdam International This book charts the turbulent history of the International Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU) from its foundation in 1913, to its dissolution in 1945. Established to protect and advance the interests of workers of all countries and to further international solidarity, the IFTU from the outset was beset by difficulties. Within a year the First World War split the fledgling organisation, underlining national interests and creating resentment between some of the most powerful union interests. Although these differences were patched up after the end of hostilities, the Revolution in Russia and rise of Soviet Communism, with own aspirations to leadership of international labour, soon created new tensions within the IFTU. Although no formal IFTU archive survives, Dr Geert Van Goethem has drawn
on a wealth of sources in France, Germany, Britain, North America and
Scandinavia to reconstruct a convincing and lively account of the IFTU.
Beginning with a chronological account of the IFTU, the book then provides
thematic discussions regarding key themes, including the challenges offered
by rival Soviet organisations, social reform programmes, the role of women,
the American Federation of Labor, anti-fascist activities, the work of
the IFTU during the Second World War and the co-operation of international
trade unions with Allied secret service and propaganda organisations.

Geschiedenis van de Provincie Antwerpen - een politieke biografie Dit boek presenteert de 'politieke biografie' van de provincie Antwerpen
gedurende de 19e en 20e eeuw. Van een instelling die aanvankelijk enkel
infrastructuurwerken leek te 'beheren', evolueerde de provincie tot een
volwaardig bestuursniveau dat een brede waaier van initiatieven ontplooide
op het vlak van sociale zorg, volksgezondheid, economische ontwikkeling,
cultuur, vrije tijd, milieu, recreatie en groenvoorzieningen. De eigenheid
van het provinciebestuur, het gevoerde beleid, de rol van de politieke
elites en hun electorale strijd om de macht komen daarbij uitgebreid aan
bod. In twee delen wordt voor het eerst een globaal inzicht geboden in de
geschiedenis van de provincie Antwerpen en haar politiek personeel. Deel 2 is opgevat als een naslagwerk.Van elk van de 1.315 provincieraadsleden, gedeputeerden, gouverneurs en griffeurs wordt een gestandariseerd biografisch lemma opgenomen. Van 137 representatieve typevoorbeelden is bovendien een uitvoeriger biografisch artikel geschreven. Deze politieke biografie van de provincie Antwerpen heeft heel wat te
bieden, zowel aaan specialisten als aan geïnteresseerde leken. Ze
beschrijft zelfs heel specifieke aspecten en vermeldt merkwaardige en
onvermoede anekdoters, maar verliest daarbij nooit het grote verhaal uit
het oog. En dat veellagige verhaal is een verrijking in allerlei opzichten:
voor de geschiedschrijving in het algemeen, voor de provincie Antwerpen
in het bijzonder |
