Gathered in front of the People's House of Sint-Jans-Molenbeek (the building at Steenweg op Gent 85 still exists and serves as the 'Centre médical César De Paepe'), militants of the Anti-Fascist Union express their opposition to the far right.
We do not know the date or the precise reason for this meeting, but in 1936, Belgium was in a deep political crisis. The 'traditional' parties of the time – Catholic, Liberal, and Socialist – had great difficulty reaching an agreement and forming a government, and were caught between the French-speaking fascists of Rex, the Dutch-speaking radical nationalists of the VNV, and the communists.
Although the situation of 1936 is not identical to that in Belgium and the world in 2026, the picture shows striking similarities to current events and reminds us of the importance of collectively defending social solidarity.
