From May 1, 2026, Margo De Koster will take over as the new director from Paule Verbruggen, who will retire at the beginning of September.

Margo De Koster is a social historian par excellence. Since 2016, she has been a professor at Ghent University, where she teaches, among other things, the History of Belgium and Historical Criticism. She has also been a professor of historical criminology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her research and teaching focus on historical criminology, social movements and collective action, migration history, policing and law enforcement.Read more]

For Margo De Koster, Amsab-ISG's mission seamlessly aligns with her passion for archives, heritage, and grassroots social history. She considers it a great privilege to contribute to and further strengthen this important mission with an open mind, acting as a bridge between heritage, research, and social engagement. 

Building on the work of her predecessor, Margo De Koster, together with a strong and motivated team, aims to further develop the institute, building on its rich and diverse collection, which reflects the broad memory of social movements and engaged citizens. She will also continue to leverage Amsab-ISG's unique expertise in participatory and inclusive heritage work, its strong socio-historical research tradition, and its solid social engagement.
