In 2026 there is Bread & Roses , the magazine of Amsab-ISG, turns thirty. We are celebrating this anniversary with various initiatives.
Where does the name come from Bread & Roses come from?
Read all about it in this article about the history of 'We want bread and we want roses too', the legendary slogan behind our magazine's name. Frederic Tilleman also turned this story into a beautiful digital story, which you can view here as well.
We asked museums and partner heritage institutions to submit objects, images, documents, and stories that, in their opinion, resonate with the meaning of Bread & Roses and bundled them in the virtual expo Bread & Roses is cheating.
We organized the writing competition Bread & Roses: justice, dignity and hope in the 21st century, in which writers were challenged to reflect on the current meaning of the slogan: 'We want bread and we want roses too'.
Out of more than a hundred entries, three winning texts were ultimately awarded. Read them here.
Bread & Roses is the most diverse journal on social history in Flanders. Renowned professors as well as young, emerging researchers, authors outside academia, and heritage workers bring the rich history of social movements to life there.
A one-year subscription for private individuals costs only 23 euros. Do not hesitate and visit our webshop.
