The Expedition - Ghent

Historian Neslihan Doğan and photographer Çiğdem Yüksel conversed at De Expeditie during El Ghorba Talk . They discussed their passion and mission: making the first generation of Turkish women in Belgium and the Netherlands visible in migration history. They also emphasized the importance of archiving these stories.

Photographer Çiğdem Yüksel portrays these women in her work, currently on display in the exhibition " You Should Know" at the Fotomuseum Rotterdam. Neslihan Doğan previously supervised the Ghent-Turkish Heritage project at STAM and the oral history project "The Women of Breskens" at Amsab-ISG. In 2025, she will begin her doctoral research on the first generation of Turkish women in Ghent.

The discussion evening was an Amsab-ISG initiative and was included in the program of El Ghorba, a Victoria Deluxe project  . To broaden the focus to include "forgotten women" in general, Amsab-ISG organized a resource workshop beforehand. Two interventions emerged from this workshop and were also discussed during the discussion. Joppe De Campeneere spoke about trans woman Priscilla Van Sandt (1951-2009), and Amani El Haddad highlighted tatrees , traditional Palestinian embroidery.

An inspiring evening about recognition and heritage, and a wonderful collaboration with Victoria Deluxe!
