Lecture Echoes of the Past in Chile
Among the arpilleras in the exhibition Chilean Popular Resistance with Needle and Thread, Marit de Haan gave a compelling lecture on the experiences of victims of the dictatorship during the transition to democracy.
Exhibitions Interwoven stories from Chile
The exhibition "Chilean Popular Resistance with Needle and Thread" showcased colorful arpilleras, embroidered after Pinochet's coup by women and relatives of missing prisoners. They found a home with each other. Using needle and thread, they recounted their daily lives and addressed the regime's violence.
To give these stories a more personal touch, Marit de Haan collected testimonies about the Chilean transition to democracy. The drawings Sofía Moreno Aliste made based on these testimonies were brought together in a second small exhibition: " I choose to be a human rights defender .
The illustrations were created for a booklet containing the message of victims of the dictatorship for future human rights defenders. Based on the victims' testimonies, each chapter depicted a different aspect of the fight for human rights. Sofía Moreno Aliste created an illustration for each chapter. The (Spanish-language) booklet, "Yo Elijo Ser," was made available through donations during Heritage Day.
