Lucie Kamuswekera (born 1944) is one of the few Congolese women of her generation who, through her art, shapes Congo's collective memory. She learned embroidery during the colonial period and now uses it to critique both Congo's colonial past and the recent political history of the Congo Wars, which have deeply shaped her personal life. In a poignant quote from 2021, she said: "The moment I saw people die is the moment I started embroidering the history of Congo."
The exhibition at Amsab-ISG showcased a carefully selected series of her embroideries, which now have a permanent place in the archive. This exhibition was funded by Global Minds (Vliruos) and realized in collaboration with Gillian Mathys, Sarah Van Beurden, Sam Kniknie, and Maarten Hendriks, researchers at Ghent University and The Ohio State University.
