The exhibition Studio Stone continue the work of Cami and Sasha Stone in the spotlight: a duo of photographers who emerged as one of the most innovative voices in European photography during the interbellum. After a successful exhibition at the Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi, their groundbreaking work can now also be seen in our public space in Ghent. Admission is free.

Pioneers of modern photography

In the 1920s and 1930s, Cami and Sasha Stone played a prominent role in the artistic world, with their work appearing in leading magazines and exhibited from Berlin to Brussels.

Their studio – Studio Stone – specialized in advertising, architecture, art and portrait photography. Their groundbreaking style earned them much praise from critics. In their heyday, they were compared to photographers such as André Kertész, Germaine Krull, László Moholy-Nagy en Man Ray

Yet after World War II they largely disappeared from view. Until now.

A fresh look at a versatile oeuvre

In this exhibition you will see a selection of the best work of Cami and Sasha Stone from the Amsab-ISG own collectionYou will discover, among other things:

  • Industrial and architectural photographs with a keen eye for form and composition

  • Portraits of artists, scientists and politicians from their time

  • Artistic snapshots of daily life in the interbellum

  • Printed publications and political posters that show their committed side

The exhibition shows how the duo effortlessly switched between commercial assignments, artistic expression and social engagement. And how their studio grew into a place of innovation and experimentation.

The edition in Ghent is smaller in scale, but focuses on the highlights from our own collection, which includes more than 170 original prints, documents and posters by the duo.
