DHKD was founded in 1981 by a group of progressive Turkish citizens of Ghent and several Flemish citizens. As one of the pioneers among self-organized organizations in Flanders, the association played a key role in the debate on immigrant voting rights and the fight against educational discrimination, racism, and gender inequality. DHKD was more than just an association; it was a stronghold, a community school, a cultural center, a reception office, and an integration service, but above all, a second home for minorities.
In 2021, DHKD celebrated its 40th anniversary. As part of this anniversary, an intergenerational heritage project was launched to preserve, research, and share the association's history. DHKD youth took the lead, collecting archives, conducting interviews, and shaping the organization's story. This project culminated in 2023 with the exhibition at Amsab-ISG.
The exhibition was a collaboration between DHKD, Amsab-ISG, STAM (The Square Kilometer) and Erfgoedcel Gent, with support from the City of Ghent and Cultuur Gent.
