The Green Corner
In the Green Corner, Amsab-ISG brings together everything related to the history of the environment, nature, and the engagement surrounding them. Soon, you will find a literature guide and collection guide specifically dedicated to this theme, as well as information about ongoing projects. We take you along on various journeys, such as the interview project on green pioneers and the planned exhibition on nature amnesia and nature observers. Additionally, stories based on archival material appear here, and we keep you informed about ongoing research within this domain.
Maurits Bequaert (1892-1973) was an engineer, archaeologist, and amateur ornithologist from Bruges. From 1936 until the end of 1972, he meticulously recorded his bird observations in an impressive series of 59 notebooks. Jeanne Schotte, his wife, made sketches and developed a number of them into watercolors.
Since the autumn of 2025, there has been a lot of movement regarding the environment and nature at Amsab-ISG.
With this text, Amsab-ISG aims to provide the interested reader with tools and guide them through the diverse landscape of the Belgian environmental movement, and above all, to invite them to explore this diverse, colorful, and increasingly urgent subject for themselves.
During a Wikipedia writing session at Amsab-ISG, twenty participants digitally put female pioneers of Belgian environmental and nature conservation in the spotlight. Armed with publications, sources, and footnotes, they wrote new articles about these green pioneers, thereby helping to reduce the gender imbalance in the online encyclopedia.
On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, FARO organized the Groot Onderhoud at STAM in Ghent, the annual highlight of the heritage sector. This year's central theme was 'Vulnerable Knowledge', and the Amsab-ISG Environment team also joined in with its own contribution on the sustainability of project knowledge.
Amsab-ISG is working on a new exhibition about nature amnesia and nature observers, scheduled for the autumn of 2026.
The Journal for the History of Environment and Society (JHES) 10/2025 has been published as a special issue marking ten years of ecological historiography. The journal is co-published by Amsab-ISG and is available online free of charge in open access.
Amsab-ISG participated in the international conference Citizen Practices in Producing and Preserving the Past in Esch-sur-Alzette. The conference brought researchers and heritage partners together around the question of how citizens, associations, and activists explore and pass on the past.
Björn Rzoska, health permitting, has already provided us with part of his rich archive, primarily files from the period in which he served in the Flemish Parliament (2013-2024), where he played an active role in his position as Groen party group leader.
A remarkable archive, which provides outstanding insight into the behind-the-scenes workings of an early green party, is that of Johan Malcorps, former political secretary of Agalev.
In this workshop, three artists come together with a shared passion for plants: as a cooking pillar, a ritualistic presence and a storytelling tool. This workshop traces plants as carriers of heritage and bearers of stories, with an emphasis on bringing people together. Watch the full video online now!
