Social media has changed the world, whether you actively participate or not. Platforms like Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram are the new village square, where everyone can make their voice heard. From the 1970s to the 1990s, social movements had to recruit supporters through pamphlets, flyers, and other paper media. In the last 20 years, the internet and social media have significantly changed the approach of protest movements. The sources from our digital archive tell a story about the major events of recent years. The case of the abortion movement illustrates the evolution from paper to digital communication within protest movements. What role has social media played, and what can we expect in the future? Helena Dierick taught this lesson to two classes at the IVG school in Ghent on April 27th. Using various historical sources from our collection, Helena delved into the history of the abortion movement and how social movements used to recruit supporters. FARO came by to take some photos. A successful day!
