It has been scientifically established that humans laugh too little on this earthly hell. Laughter is a necessity, like water, air, bread, love, and everything that comes with it.

This quote is from the first issue of Koekoek , which appeared on May 14, 1931. For four years, Vooruit dominated the Flemish weekly press. Koekoek highlighted figures from politics or the world of art and culture with a healthy dose of humor every week. The last issue appeared on April 25, 1935.

Koekoek owes his fame primarily to the serial " De brieven van Pierken" (The Letters of Pierken) by Richard Minne, illustrated by Frits Van den Berghe, the house illustrator for the socialist publisher Het Licht. He also published comic strips in the weekly magazine under the title " Uit mijn album" (From my album) .

The complete collection contains 207 issues. These have now been digitized and made full-text searchable using OCR.
