September 11th marks the 50th anniversary of the deposition (and suicide) of democratically elected President Salvador Allende in Chile. With the support of the CIA and the US military, General Pinochet put an end to Allende's socialist program and transformed Chile into a neoliberal economy. The coup, which took place simultaneously on multiple fronts, began shortly before dawn when the Chilean navy captured the city of Valparaíso. During the coup and the subsequent dictatorship, which lasted seventeen years, tens of thousands of people were arrested, imprisoned, tortured, and murdered. It's no wonder people call it the other 9/11. Be sure to keep an eye on our newsletter, as we are busy preparing the next exhibition on this theme.
