Antwerp was particularly hard hit by the war. 25,000 city residents died due to Nazi terror, the persecution of Jews, and military violence. The MAS aims to highlight this important history with a new exhibition.
The exhibition brings the society of that time to life with symbolic locations such as a cinema, a school, a house, the cathedral, and the town hall. There, personal stories and artifacts from Antwerp residents make the drama of war tangible. Stories of division, powerlessness, betrayal, violence, but also of courage, resistance, and help. Stories never to be forgotten.
The exhibition "Fragile City: War in Antwerp 1940-1945" will be on display at the MAS from September 8, 2023.
