We'll start at the Kouter and, after the human rights monument at Geldmunt, walk to Miriam Makebaplein to highlight Ghent as a city of human rights. Ghent boasts several monuments and memorials related to respect for human rights. The speakers at the monuments will be former mayor Frank Beke and honorary magistrate Henri Heimans. The latter worked for 45 years at the Ministry of Justice, specializing in criminal law and the protection of human rights.
The walk is also being held in conjunction with an international conference of the Ghent University Human Rights Research Network, which will begin in Ghent on December 6 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The walk starts at 2 p.m. from the Kouter at the artwork Mystic Leaves .
