Dutch photographer Annabel Oosteweeghel (born 1969) calls her narrative, personal photography projects "imaginary documentaries." She takes social phenomena as her starting point, expressing them in carefully stylized and staged images. The webinar was recorded during the live Photo31 event in collaboration with Fotoclub Nijmegen at Theater Brebl, where Annabel was interviewed by Robert Theunissen. The conversation is preceded by 10 minutes of piano performance by Barend Houtsmuller. Watch the webinar here .
The interview is part of the exhibition "Variétés - Photography and the Avant-Garde, " which runs from June 26 to October 22, 2023, at Huis Marseille in Amsterdam. The exhibition features a unique collection of avant-garde and surrealist photographs from the 1920s. The collection owes its origins to the Belgian art magazine Variétés, which only ran for two years before going bankrupt. Variétés was an important international platform for a young generation of photographers and their new, adventurous visual language. Amsab-ISG preserves the rich Variétés photo collection.
