The Middle Committee played an important role in the BWP. The congress was, in principle, the highest decision-making body within the branch, but the Middle Committee was responsible for day-to-day management and, as such, wielded considerable power. The Middle Committee was composed of representatives from organizations and associations affiliated with the party. This somewhat unusual arrangement resulted from the fact that a sympathizer could not become a member of the BWP itself individually, but could only do so through an affiliated organization or association.
The logbooks cover the periods 1883-1887 and 1899-1922. They contain minutes of meetings of the Central Committee, congress reports, and reports on the activities of the affiliated organizations and associations. The minutes were recorded manually, and newspaper clippings were occasionally pasted in. This made OCR unfeasible, and the PDFs cannot be automated.
