Amsab-ISG has received a special historical document from the Ghent City Archives: the register of the Ghent Association for General Suffrage, founded in 1880.

This nearly 145-year-old register contains valuable information about the League, which played a crucial role in the struggle for universal suffrage and the early labor movement in Belgium.

The League, founded by the Flemish Socialist Workers' Party, contributed to the broader movement that ultimately led to universal male suffrage in 1919. The register contains meeting minutes, membership lists, and other documents, including a letter from August Lootens from 1886, a key figure in this struggle.

For Amsab Institute for Social History, the donation of the register by the Ghent City Archives represents an exceptional addition to its extensive collection. In recent years, both archival institutions have regularly transferred collections and items to each other, with the aim of strengthening both collection profiles. We therefore look forward to continuing this collaboration in the future.
