Bij Amsab-ISG werken we samen met een betrokken team van vrijwilligers, die een cruciale bijdrage leveren aan onze werking. Ze ondersteunen ons bij de waardering en verwerking van de collectie, werken mee aan onderzoek en helpen bij publieksactiviteiten.

When you enter the museum through the main entrance, you end up at a reception hall with additional information about visiting. 

From there, you can easily follow the lines on the floor to the exposition hall. If needed, there is also a backdoor that leads straight to the expositions. 

Otherwise, Digidaar also contains an archive centre, where you can browse through Voem's digitized archives. There is also a music corner, with music connected to Voem's label SAWNA. And last but not least, the event space, for which you can find the schedule at the entrance.

About the project

Digidaar is a virtual archive centre and museum where the heritage of Voem vzw comes to life in an interactive fashion. The project under which this space is developed runs from 2024 till 2026 and is titled Heritage and diversity in the Metaverse. 

Digidaar translates to ‘digital home’ from Arabic. Together with the communities surrounding Voem we are building a space, brick by digital brick, where heritage is not only stored but also shared, experienced, and shaped anew. 

With Digidaar we want to make this heritage accessible for the heritage community itself, as well as for a broader public – with a focus on younger and less well-represented groups. 

Voem: partner and archive creator  

Voem vzw is one of the archive creators linked with Amsab-ISH. For over 35 years, the social-cultural organisation has been committed to creating space for dialogue in a superdiverse society. Voem originated from within muslim communities in Belgium and has grown into a broad platform for art, culture, and social reflection. The organisation supports artists, organises community events and helps build urban networks around issues such as migration, identity, and heritage. 

Voem's archives – consisting of documents, photographs, posters, and audiovisual materials – are being stored by Amsab-ISH. This forms the foundation for Digidaar.   

From DiverzCity to Digidaar   

During the corona pandemic, Voem took their first steps into the digital world. DiverzCity became their virtual office space, ideal for meeting and collaborating. 

Digidaar builds upon this by adding a virtual museum environment, where Voem's heritage can be presented in an interactive manner. 

Heritage for, and by, the community

From the start, Digidaar had been set up as a participative project. In the first project year we have brought together a diverse and engaged community surrounding Voem's heritage. Through conversations, creative sessions, and gatherings we worked together with volunteers, artists, and partner organisations affiliated with Voem. Their input was crucial to making choices regarding what we bring to the virtual world, and how we do so.

Based on their input, we selected materials from Voem's archives and curated the opening exhibitions. The Czech company Space Makers then integrated all this content into an interactive 3D environment. Here users can not only discover the heritage, but in time will also be able to further interact with it – think photo collages, image editing, or highlighting favorite pieces. These options are still being developed, and can continue to grow in number as we receive user feedback.

During Heritage Day, on 27 April 2025, the Digidaar expositions were first presented to the public, at the Wintercircus in Ghent. 

A virtual space teeming with life

In the second project year, starting July 2025, we will be fully committed on activating the space and creating engagement. We will let artists affiliated with Voem expose their work, host a creative competition, and use the virtual space for public activities. 

Related to this, we are examining how Digidaar can harbour forms of immaterial heritage such as calligraffiti, slam poetry, or textile arts. To bring this heritage to life in a digital environment, we will host interactive workshops with experts in their respective fields. 

Artists in residency

Three different artists will take up a residency at Digidaar. They will produce new work based on Voem's heritage, and present it to the world in the form of a temporary exposition. Keep your eye on our calendar and our expo page to stay updated.

Our first artist was Fatemeh Khezri, who worked with Voem's archives to present us with HYPERTRACE - ابر اثر. Fatemeh's exhibition offers a poetic and critical perspective on heritage in the digital age. It shows how archives are not simply repositories of the past, but living guides that can help us imagine the future.

Our second artist is Radwan, who will work on VoemTropy. This will be a conceptual exhibition exploring space as the only realm where the past remains visible and preserved. Through mixed-media collage and photography from the Voem archive, the exhibition narrates the origin of Voem as a symbolic “Big Bang” and traces how moments, events, and experiences accelerated, collided, and dispersed into the present.

A pioneer in digital heritage  

Digidaar is a cultural project, but also a technological experiment. We are actively seeking out news ways to share heritage in an interactive and digital manner. 

The knowledge we acquire in this way, we are eager to share with the broader heritage sector – through publications, workshops, and virtual tours. In addition, we are leading a community of practice where heritage professionals and technological experts can exchange ideas on the future of digital heritage work.

Jouw archief of dat van je organisatie kan bestaan uit allerlei soorten materialen: documenten, publicaties, affiches, foto’s, video’s, digitale bestanden en zelfs voorwerpen. Al dit materiaal kan een belangrijke bijdrage leveren aan het begrip van sociale bewegingen, zowel uit het verleden als het heden. Amsab-ISG wil jouw erfgoed veiligstellen, zodat toekomstige generaties het kunnen raadplegen.

Hoe verloopt een archiefoverdracht?

  1. Contact en eerste beoordeling - Wanneer je contact met ons opneemt, bekijken we samen of jouw archief past binnen het collectieprofiel van Amsab-ISG. Dit doen we aan de hand van een gesprek over de inhoud, omvang en staat van het materiaal. We nemen doorgaans binnen twee weken een beslissing of het archief voor overdracht in aanmerking komt.
  2. Plaatsbezoek en selectie - Indien nodig komt een medewerker van Amsab-ISG bij je langs om het materiaal te bekijken. We maken een selectie van het relevante archief en besluiten welke stukken we gaan opnemen. Dubbele of minder belangrijke documenten worden niet meegenomen.
  3. Overdracht en transport - We spreken af hoe het archief bij ons terechtkomt. Dit kan door het archief op te halen, te leveren of, bij digitale bestanden, via een veilige overdracht.
  4. Tweede selectie - Na de overdracht maken we een tweede selectie. In sommige gevallen kan materiaal later alsnog worden afgevoerd, maar dit wordt altijd vooraf besproken. Bij de overdracht wordt een verklaring van overdracht ondertekend, waarin eventuele bijzondere afspraken vastgelegd kunnen worden.
  5. Bewaring en verwerking - Het geselecteerde archief wordt professioneel geregistreerd en opgeslagen in ons depot. Om de materialen goed te bewaren, zorgen we voor een geschikte klimaatregeling en maken we gebruik van zuurvrije mappen en archiefdozen.
  6. Toegankelijkheid - Na verwerking wordt het archief ontsloten via onze online catalogus en leeszaal, zodat onderzoekers en andere geïnteresseerden het kunnen raadplegen.

Voorwaarden voor overdracht

De overdracht van jouw archief aan Amsab-ISG is volledig kosteloos, maar er zijn enkele voorwaarden:

  • Het materiaal moet passen binnen ons collectieprofiel - Dit wordt besproken in een eerste gesprek.
  • Eigendomsoverdracht - Archiefstukken worden doorgaans als schenking aanvaard, wat betekent dat het eigendomsrecht wordt overgedragen aan Amsab-ISG.

De collectie in cijfers 

Met een totale lengte van 16 kilometer is onze collectie omvangrijk. Ongeveer de helft hiervan bestaat uit archieven, aangevuld met meer dan 100.000 boeken, 17.000 tijdschrifttitels en een museale verzameling met onder andere 850.000 foto’s, 35.000 affiches en 20.000 kunstobjecten, waaronder enkele topstukken.

Ook onze digitale collectie groeit dagelijks en omvat momenteel meer dan 25 TB aan data, met zo’n 4,4 miljoen digitale bestanden.

Altijd in beweging

Onze collectie evolueert mee met veranderingen in de samenleving en het erfgoedlandschap. Zo hebben ook nieuwe vormen van (digitaal) activisme, zoals #-activisme, een plek in onze collectie. De participatie van erfgoedgemeenschappen en samenwerking met andere organisaties is hierbij essentieel. 

Duurzame erfgoedzorg 

Amsab-ISG biedt professionele en duurzame zorg voor het erfgoed dat aan ons wordt toevertrouwd. Dit doen we in nauwe samenwerking met onze erfgoedgemeenschappen, vrijwilligers en professionele partners, zowel nationaal als internationaal. 

We blijven alert op maatschappelijke en technologische ontwikkelingen. Zo hebben we grote vooruitgang geboekt in de digitalisering, met speciale aandacht voor onder meer de archivering van websites en sociale media. 

Erfgoed voor iedereen 

Wij maken erfgoed zo toegankelijk, doorzoekbaar en herbruikbaar mogelijk. Zodra collecties zijn verzameld en bewaard, zorgen we ervoor dat ze eenvoudig te raadplegen zijn. Via onze website, onlinecatalogus en andere platforms brengen we het erfgoed dichter bij een breed publiek en stimuleren we hergebruik.
